Finally! No more IE/Mac!

I can’t believe it — The new OS 10.4 (Tiger) does not ship with Internet Explorer!

Plus. MS’s web fonts (verdana, georgia, courier, etc), which formerly were only installed thanks to IE, do come with Tiger. (hat tip to Dominey)

IE’s removal makes total sense since MS stopped development on it about two years ago. We were worried that Apple wouldn’t license the web fonts from MS, which would mean that a LOT of sites would have changed appearance without warning (granted, only to those users with fresh-clean Tiger installs, but still).

Safari’s New Text Selection Model

Maybe it’s just me, but one of the fun things about a Mac is how you’ve always been able grab an image in a web page and drag it around and see it floating translucently over everything else. Stupid, I know, but it became a sort of online tic for me. I’d grab an image, drag it off to the side, and let go to see it zip back into place.

The latest Safari update (in Panther) seems to have introduced a new text-selection model — selecting text now results in much larger swaths of blue than it used to. And when you click and drag an image, to fulfil your online tic, the image now turns blue, as if you had included it in a text selection you were creating.

This is almost to stupid to be a bummer, but it takes away some of the gracefulness of the Safari experience. I can still drag images, but I have to click off the image once I’m done to de-select it. Harumph.
