New Hotness: Pirated-Sites.com

My old dog, Pirated Sites, has picked up some new tricks, namely, a phpBB forum.

PS.com has been around for about 5 years, and was feeling its age. Times were simpler then, and I had much less on my plate. Of late, the site had been neglected and infrequently updated. Despite this, traffic remained consistent and the site remained a resource for designers, developers and even college professors (hi Suzanne!).

My hope is that installing forums will allow the users to take ownership of the site. They can tell their own stories, upload their own screenshots, and follow up later with more info. Plus, for the first time, users can get real feedback from the rest of the community.

So, if you’re a long-time PS.com fan, or have never heard of it, give it a shot. (The original site will continue to live here.)

An empty forum is a lonely thing.

(Oh, and if anyone knows of any slick, minimalist phpBB templates, please let me know!)

IE7 to Have Tabs

So, IE7 is going to have tabbed browsing. I’m not going to get snarky and ask where they were 5 years ago; they considered them and decided not to implement them for what, I’m sure, seemed like good reasons.

I am, however, going to ask: How do you think MS will clutter up and make more complicated the already-established experience of tabbed browsing?

MS has a history of installing new features that are already popular in other places, but trying to make them such a complicated fusion of user-friendly and overly-robust that they turn into a half-useful mess (IE’s new popup blocker is my favorite example).

IE Market Share Keeps Dropping

According to WebSideStory (NYT), Internet Explorer’s market share has dropped below 90% for the first time in what feels like forever.

Even discounting non-Windows users, IE still only sits at 91%. Interestingly, Firefox has a 23% share in Germany. Those Deutch dislike them some Microsoft, I guess.

Apple Tablets?

Apparently Apple has a patent on some sort of tablet-PC-type device (The Mac Observer). It would be lovely to think that there’s a tablet-based Mac coming soon, but here are my predictions:

1. Apple has no plans to release a tablet-based Mac in the near future. The patent could simply be to protect technology that R&D funds have been spent on.

If I’m wrong, however:

2. Apple will develop a killer tablet-based Mac. They will figure out why earlier tablets didn’t work, and consumers will say “Holy crow! So that’s how a tablet can help me!”

3. However, it will have the standard Apple price markup, so other PC-makers will latch on to the innovation, whatever it is, create derivations, and tablets will be the new iPod.

That last bit is a stretch, but following the iMac and iPod, the “iTablet” could complete the trifecta.

What is UP with the state of web development courses?

In my job I interview client-side developers on a fairly regular basis. As some of you may know, it’s quite hard to find qualified applicants. A lot of the resumes I read are from folks who started web development in ’99, taught themselves this new thing called web development, but failed to keep up with the times — I’m always shocked at how many resumes I see that don’t list CSS as a skill.

These people aren’t my problem. If you aren’t interested in continuing education, fine, see you later.

My problem is with the people who just got out of school, actually studied web development (very recently), and still have no CSS, DOM or XHTML skills. Heck, I’m glad if they’ve heard of them!

And, to be precise, my problem isn’t with the people — it’s with the schools who are teaching them legacy crap, and aren’t teaching the skills needed to be competitive, or even competent in today’s market.

This is something that really should be looked into, and I think I will.

Students are paying to learn legacy crap!
