What the… Is this really Fred Flintsone’s voice?

Fred and Henry

Apparently DDB/Chicago are responsible for the new Midas commercial featuring Fred Flintstone (last item on the page) and his pal Barney, but hopefully they aren’t responsible for the new voice casting behind the voices, particularly Fred’s voice.

Henry Corden had been Fred’s voice since 1977, but he passed away in May. His voice was very distinctive, and his performances, whether in the cartoons or in other commercial work, were perfectly suited to Fred’s character.

The new voice is far from ideal. It’s baritone and male, but those are the only resemblances to the voice we all know and love.

Sure, it’s hard to follow such a well-established act, but come on… surely they can do better than that? My hope is that Hanna-Barberra simply has not found a suitable replacement, and a temp voice had to be used.

MP3 Manufacturers Everywhere are Shaking Their Heads and Moaning, or, Why it’s inevitable that I will eventually buy an iPod nano

iPod nano

I’ve owned three iPods so far — the first generation model (with the mechanical wheel and buttons), the 3rd gen model (with the touch-sensitive buttons) and the shuffle.

I loved the first, but the original 4gig drive started to cramp my style. Plus the wheel kept falling off.

So: Upgrade. 15gig drive, non-mechanical wheel. But the buttons were also non-mechanical and were a bit too twitchy. Plus the battery life sucked — I got one of the problem cases.

Anyhow, I realized that even though I was carrying the vast majority of my collection with me, I still listened to the same stuff over and over. The solution? Take away the ability to choose and switch to the shuffle. Half a gig of random songs was just what the doctor ordered.

But, now, I am out-growing the shuffle. I have broken my habit of listening to the same stuff all the time, and have learned to branch out. While I absolutely love the form factor, the lack of a screen (while liberating in some ways) is starting to chafe.

Enter the nano. I have not ordered one yet, but it is only a matter of time. The smallness of the form is amazing, the 2 (or 4) gig flash drive is a goodly amount of music without providing all the music all the time (meaning I can rotate the library and hear more music). Plus, the screen, oh the screen. I have coveted the iPod photo since it came out, but couldn’t justify the expense. But now all screened iPods have color, and I can have my cake and eat it too.

(I think there are some who don’t see the point in the photo capabilities, but, for me, it would be nice to be able to whip out some fun photos to share on a whim.)

Anyway, the point of the title of this post is, yes, I will buy one eventually, and the job of every manufacturer with an “iPod killer” just got that much harder.

The only question left is: White or black?

I just don’t know.

TV Board Games: Oh So Craptacular

TV Board Games: Knight RiderFor some reason I have a minor collection of board games based on TV shows from the 70s and 80s. I took these (bad) photos of them a few years ago, and figured why not stick them on Flickr. Check out the set.

Sorkin and Lowe, Together Again

I’m a HUGE West Wing fan, and was sad to see Rob Lowe’s character written out due to contract and creative differences a few seasons ago.

Along with being a WW fan, I’m an Aaron Sorkin fan in general, so I’ve been looking forward to his next project, a film called The Farnsworth Invention. However, according to this article, the project is no longer a film:

The Farnsworth Invention, will be staged later this year. It recounts the story of Philio Farnsworth, the man who reportedly invented the television before John Logie Baird, but did not share any credit for the invention…

Sorkin had originally intended to make The Farnsworth Invention as a feature film, and US-producers New Line Cinema had taken an option on the screenplay. However, Sorkin subsequently decided to rewrite it as a play.

Hopefully the play will come to the states, or (like A Few Good Men) they’ll make it into a movie after it runs on Broadway.

I had a point… Oh yeah: Rob Lowe will be starring in the play. Good to see fences weren’t burned.
